Round 2 WNBL Review
October 21st 2010 11:45
It was another huge round in the WNBL and there were some massive upsets as well along with some real cliffhangers. At the end of this round, 4 teams would be left winless while 2 teams remain undefeated.
Bendigo 74 lost to Dandenong 76
It was a superb match in the first Victorian derby of the season. Neither side were prepared to give an inch and Bendigo's offense was a vast improvement on the Round 1 disaster against Canberra. The biggest margin was 9 points in favour of Bendigo but this Dandenong side, they never fight and they never surrender. The same thing could be said of Bendigo who trailed by 7 points with 2 minutes left before launching a challenge which almost forced the game into overtime
Gabriella Richards was massive for Bendigo with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Kathleen McLeod continued to pace Dandenong with 16 points
Bendigo slip to 0-2 while Dandenong surprisingly continue their unbeaten run at 3-0

Canberra 73 defeated Sydney 60
The old cliche is that "a game could be of two halves" with one team owning one half and the other team owning the second half. Such a cliche could definately be applied to this game and it's a shame the margin blew out like it did. Sydney dominated the first quarter (17-9) and led at half-time 31-24 and looked like causing one of the bigger upsets of the season. Canberra though responded as champions do and forced the Sydney offence to a stop as they took control of the second half to claim a memorable win
Carly Wilson led the way for Canberra with 25 points while Amy Denson continued her good form with 22 for Sydney
Canberra extend their record to 3-0 while Sydney slip to 2-1

West Coast 86 defeated Bulleen 75
Well this would definately go down as the biggest upset of the season to date with West Coast improbably emerging with an unbelievable 11 point win. Bulleen had the early ascendency leading 30-22 at quarter-time but from there it was West Coast who took control with what could be a classed as a typical last 3/4 performance (i.e. snatch the lead back in the 2nd quarter, hold that lead in the 3rd quarter, run away with the game in the 4th quarter).
The difference in this game was Tuly Bevilaqua who scored 19 points and had 9 assists to back up Melissa Marsh's 22 points for West Coast while Rachel Jarry hit 22 points and Elizabeth Cambage hit 19 points and 11 rebounds
West Coast improve to 1-1 while Bulleen slip to 0-2 and coincidentally Bulleen only lost 2 games for the whole of last season.

Townsville 73 lost to Logan 82
Another game, another ridiculous fadeout by the Townsville Fire. It may be only 2 games into the season for Townsville but there has been a disturbing trend of last quarter fadeouts. Last week they were outscored 24-12 by Sydney and this week 23-15 by Logan. Some real concerns for Townsville but it seems a bit unkind overlooking Logan's performance. They played hard and tight basketball and kept up with their more fancied Queensland rivals for the whole night before shooting away in the last quarter for the win. It was in fact their first ever win in Townsville as they continue to sit near the top of the table.
Emma Randall led the scoring for logan with 19 points while Rachel Allison led all scorers for Townsville with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

AIS 46 lost to Canberra 80
What's the best way of recovering from a taxing match on a Friday night? Have yourself a match against the AIS on the Saturday night. This was looming as the biggest mismatch and really, it proved to be that way. Fans were calling for the game to end when the AIS opened the scoring but that sadly was the end of it. Canberra won every quarter (28-6 14-10 19-17 19-13) and looking at that, you could say that the AIS showed more fight in the last 3 quarters but really Canberra shot at 64% in the opening quarter while the AIS had an astonishing 18 turnovers in the first half.
Nicole Romeo led all scorers with 19 points for Canberra while Tess Lavey led the AIS scorers with 11 points
Canberra continue their unbeaten run at 4-0 while the AIS slip to 0-2 but their not alone at that figure either

Adelaide 83 defeated West Coast 74
This game was fairly tight for the large majority of it as West Coast sought to complete their second straight win while Adelaide were looking to avoid a second straight loss. For the large part, it was too close to call but in the last quarter, the game changed as Adelaide exploded away from West Coast with an astonishing 13-0 run. Looking at the stats, West Coast had more shots and 6 more turnovers while Adelaide had 7 more steals. Really though, the main difference here was shooting efficiency with Adelaide shooting at a credible 47% as opposed to West Coast's 37%
Teagan Cunningham was absolutely fantastic for Adelaide with 27 points while Tuly Bevilaqua led the scoring for West Coast with 16 points.
