Round 7 2010 AFL Premiership Season
May 11th 2010 04:33
Well Round 7 of the 2010 AFL Premiership Season has come and gone and there have been some very notable results.
The round kicked off on a Friday night at the MCG and the weather reduced this clash to a low scoring slog. It was the Field of Women match (raising money for breast cancer) and both teams got into the spirit of the game with the Bulldogs wearing pink socks and Melbourne having pink instead of red. The umpires also wore pink and this proved to clash with the pink of Melbourne. As for the game, it was Tom Scully that set the Demons alight with 39 disposals and the Demons really should've won the game. They were 9 points up with 4 minutes left before the Bulldogs rallied to clain a famous win.
Melbourne 9.12.66 lost to Bulldogs 10.10.70
Saturday in Melbourne saw an absolute classic between Essendon and Port Adelaide. The first half was hard and tough with the lead changing constantly however at half-time, the Bombers held a 1 point lead. Both teams had scored 7 goals each to that point however the 3rd quarter was an absolute classic with Essendon scoring 7 goals to Port Adelaide's 6 to extend their lead to 2 goals at the last change. This however is a new Port Adelaide and they eventually overturned Essendon's lead and held on in a cliff-hanger to win by 3 points. Davey, Gumbleton and Monfries booted 3 for Essendon while Ebert, Motlop and Westhoff booted 3 for Port Adelaide.
Essendon 16.10.106 lost to Port Adelaide 17.7.109
Saturday afternoon over at Subiaco saw a match which could decide which team won't be playing finals. West Coast vs Hawthorn. Both teams have promised a lot, neither have delivered. This game would showcase both the best and worst that both teams are renowned for. West Coast made the early running, leading by 21 at half-time however against the odds, the Hawks fought back to trail by 7 at 3/4 time. Roughead had a chance to close the gap but inexplicably decided to volley from 15m out rather than take possession and run into an open goal. The Eagles then booted a quick few and it appeared game over, only to see the Hawks come charging home to lose by just 8 points. Mark Le Cras kicked 6 goals for West Coast while Jarryd Roughead kicked 6 goals for Hawthorn
West Coast 15.12.102 defeated Hawthorn 14.10.94
Saturday night in Melbourne saw a free-flowing Collingwood secure their fourth consecutive 60 point win as they took apart North Melbourne. North Melbourne weren't disgraced as they kicked 14 goals but this mattered little as Collingwood kicked 23 goals. Steele Sidebottom continued his rise with 5 goals as Collingwood attacked from all angles and dominated with 42 shots on goal to North Melbourne's 21. North Melbourne saw Liam Anthony go off with a potentially serious shoulder injury but no excuses as Collingwood maintain their spot at the top of the table.
Collingwood 23.19.157 defeated North Melbourne 14.7.91
Saturday night at the Gabba saw the biggest upset imaginable as Fremantle joined Collingwood at 6-1 as they knocked off the Brisbane Lions by 13 points. This was Fremantle's first ever win at the Gabba but it didn't come without its normal scares. Brisbane took the early running but from that point on, Freo took control however they were rather wasteful in front of goals. The 3rd quarter was a disaster for the Lions as they lost both Josh Drummond (knee) and Jared Brennan (ankle) but they kept coming. In the last quarter they were 27 points down before closing to within 6 on countless occasions but this new look Freo hung on to win
Brisbane 15.10.100 lost to Fremantle 15.23.113
Sunday down in Geelong saw an in-form Sydney take on an in-form Geelong. For the first half, it was pretty close as both teams played some good, tough football. At half-time though, things changed as Sydney just dropped. They were second best and they couldn't handle Gary Ablett Jr (203 SC Points) and they couldn't stop James Podsiadly nor the Geelong team. Geelong blew the game right open with a 12 goal to 4 second half and they crusied to a 67 point win. Podsiadly kicked 5 goals with Chapman and Varcoe both kicking 3 while for a sorry Sydney, Kieran Jack was their only multiple goalkicker, kicking 2 goals.
Geelong 19.12.126 defeated Sydney 9.5.59
Sunday twilight over in Adelaide saw the wooden-spoon contest between Adelaide and Richmond. This will not go down as a classic by any means but the manner of victory for the Adelaide Crows was quite extraordinary. It was a very tight and scrappy game for 3.5 quarters and even with about 15 minutes to go, scores were level. Suddeny, Adelaide went berserk and kicked the last 8 goals of the game and what was promising to be a close finish, turned into an unbelievable blowout. Adelaide kicked their highest score of the season with their best quarter and doubled their score from 3/4 time.
Adelaide 15.14.104 defeated Richmond 7.12.54
It was Monday night football at Etihad with St Kilda taking on Carlton and Carlton have snapped a 9 year losing streak against the Saints to record a memorable 61 point win. The question of No Riewoldt, No St Kilda grew louder as St Kilda capitulated in some awful football. Carlton broke the game open in the first quarter and continued to expand the lead at each break. Betts kicked 5 with Waite and Garlett booting 4 for Carlton while for St Kilda, Steven and Gram both kicked 2. Some worries at St Kilda with their second loss in the last 3 weeks and playing some crap football in all 3 games
St Kilda 9.14.68 lost to Carlton 20.9.129
So ends the summary of the weekend's action
