Round 8 AFL Premiership Season Review

May 19th 2010 06:09
Well Round 8 of the Premiership Season has come and gone and really for some, it was a nightmare. As for tipsters and those who had Gary Ablett as their SC or DT captain, it wasn't a round to be proud of.

Round 8 kicked off on a Friday night on the other side of the country in Perth for the Match of the Round between Collingwood and Fremantle. Both teams were sitting 6-1 however the game (for my perspective) was a bit of a fiasco. Collingwood got a 5 goal run in the first quarter and Freo were always scrambling to try to get back into the game. Collingwood then went on another 5 goal burst in the 3rd quarter and that was all she wrote. Despite their best efforts, Freo lost by 6 goals. Travis Cloke kicked 5 goals and Alan Didak kicked 3 for Collingwood while multiple players kicked 2 goals for Fremantle

Fremantle 15.7.97 lost to Collingwood 20.13.133

Saturday saw a match where Barry Hall took on his old side for the first time since the acromonious split from the Sydney Swans last year. It was therefore good that this match took place at a neutral ground in Canberra. The Bulldogs took advantage of a Sydney team missing Mark Seaby, Shane Mumford and Daniel Bradshaw and really blew a 2nd rate Swans out of the water. The Bulldogs could've won by a lot more than the 38 points they did had they kicked something better than 7 behinds in the lasdt quarter. Barry Hall kicked 5 goals for the Bulldogs while Adam Goodes played a lone hand kicking 4 goals for the Swans

Over at the MCG, it was the battle of the number 1 and 2 draft pick from 2008 with Jack Watts taking on Nic Naitanui and Melbourne taking on West Coast. This game will not go down as an all-time classic and in fact would be one of the worst matches of the season. Scores were level at half-time but then the Eagles took command to record a memorable win and in fact, their first win at the MCG in 3 years. Kennedy and LeCras kicked 2 for the Eagles while Green kicked 2 for Melbourne.

Melbourne 6.11.47 lost to West Coast 10.15.75

Saturday night horrors returned to the Gabba for another installment. After an embarrassing loss to Freo, the Brisbane Lions again left their fans short of value as they slipped to a demoralising 81 point defeat against Geelong. This game turned into a training drill after the Lions were blown out of the water in the first quarter, trailing by 26 points. From there, the lead increased at every change before Geelong cruised to an 81 point win. Steve Johnson was a star for the Cats, kicking 6 goals with Tom Hawkins booting 4. As for the Lions, Jonathan Brown and Justin Sherman both kicked 3 goals but the Lions didn't suffer any fresh injuries which was the only good news on a dark night.
Brisbane 10.14.74 lost to Geelong 24.11.155

In Melbourne meanwhile, the most extraordinary game of the season was being played out. North Melbourne opened with 4 goals to 2 and extended the margin to 6 goals at half-time against a pathetic Adelaide. The third quarter was more of the same and had North Melbourne kicked straighter, the game would've been more than over. In any event this did prove to be the case, but not before the biggest scare imaginable. North Melbourne stopped completely in the last quarter and Adelaide came charging home hard. A 9 goal lead was whittled down to just 9 points but ultimately they fell short by 9 points. It was a thrilling rally but the Crows are now out of finals contention.
North Melbourne 12.12.84 defeated Adelaide 11.9.75

Sunday afternoon at the MCG in the "early" game saw 2 of the worst teams in the competition tangle. Richmond were still winless while the Hawks had lost 6 in a row. It was a game where the margin never got out beyond 3 goals at any stage and it was 2 desperate teams in a game that meant the world. The Hawks had Shaun Burgoyne making his debut while the Tigers continued with their emphasis on youth. This youth allowed the Tigers back into the game and had Shane Tuck managed to fire a goal late on (stopped by a Sam Mitchell tackle) the Tigers would've claimed their first win under Damien Hardwick. As such, they lost by 3 points. Cyril Rioli kicked 4 for the Hawks while Jack Riewoldt did the same for Richmond
Richmond 13.8.86 lost to Hawthorn 13.11.89

Meanwhile over at AAMI Stadium, the Power and Blues tangled in what would prove to be a thriller. The first 3 quarters were tight and honest with the Power leading at half-time and three-quarter time. The Port Adelaide of 2010 have been renowned for playing brilliant last quarters but they copped a taste of their own medicine as a 9 point lead at three-quarter time turned into a 26 point defeat following 6 goals to 1. Setanta O'Hailpin and Matthew Kreuzer kicked 3 goals for Carlton while Steven Salopek kicked 3 for Port Adelaide.
Port Adelaide 14.8.92 lost to Carlton 17.16.118

Over at Etihad Satdium, Essendon tangled with St Kilda and it was a close contest for the most part. After a low-scoring contest in the opening quarter, Essendon took command in the middle quarters to score 9 goals to 5 to lead by 13 points at three-quarter time. Despite the best efforts of St Kilda, they were only able to reduce this margin by a point at the end of the game. This is now St Kilda's 3rd loss in 4 games and the difference here was David Hille and Patrick Ryder combining for 7 goals for Essendon. Justin Koschitze and Michael Gardiner combined for 6 goals for St Kilda but they just can't kick a winning score at the moment
St Kilda 11.15.81 lost to Essendon 14.9.93

So ends the Round 8 Review
