Round 9-12 of the ANZ Championship
June 8th 2010 01:18
Well it has been an extraordinary past 4 weeks in the ANZ Championships and really there has been quite a few extraordinary stories.
Who could've predicted at the start of the season that the NSW Swifts would've claimed the minor premiership with 2 games to go and being undefeated thus far? Could they become the first ever team to complete the perfect season?
As for my team, the Melbourne Vixens, who would've predicted that they'd go from 5-0 to 5-6 and missing out on the finals? Obviously the likes of Julie Corletto and Natasha Chojkat being out has absolutely slaughtered the Vixens and their blooding of youth over the past few weeks gives hope for the future.
As for the Central Pulse, they have been the worst ever team in the ANZ Championship and they've only claimed their second ever win in almost 3 seasons by beating the Tactix. If the Pulse are dire, what does that make the Tactix? Embarrassed? Humiliated?
Anyway here are the results for the past 4 weeks of the ANZ Championship.
Round 9
WBOP Magic 72 defeated Tactix 52
Thunderbirds 58 defeated Vixens 47
Mystics 61 defeated Pulse 60
Swifts 44 defeated Firebirds 40
Steel and Fever Bye
Round 10
Pulse 45 defeated Tactix 43
Thunderbirds 53 defeated Firebirds 51
Steel 52 defeated WBOP Magic 47
Fever 52 lost to Swifts 61
Mystics and Vixens Bye
Round 11
Mystics 48 lost to Swifts 54
Steel 52 defeated Vixens 39
Thunderbirds 58 defeated Tactix 34
WBOP Magic 54 lost to Firebirds 55
Fever 63 defeated Pulse 45
Round 12
Mystics 62 defeated Fever 53
Firebirds 52 defeated Pulse 42
Vixens 43 lost to Thunderbirds 54
Steel 53 defeated Tactix 39
Swifts 60 defeated WBOP Magic 43
So at the end of 12 rounds (with all teams having had their bye), the ladder is as follows: (team, played, won, lost, bye, points for, points against, percentage, points)
Swifts 11 11 0 1 591 486 105 121.60% 22
Thunderbirds 11 8 3 1 583 488 95 119.47% 16
Steel 11 7 4 1 556 499 57 111.42% 14
WBOP Magic 11 7 4 1 571 530 41 107.74% 14
----------------------------- ----------------------------- -------------------------
Firebirds 11 6 5 1 583 530 53 110.00% 12
Mystics 11 6 5 1 595 605 -10 98.35% 12
Vixens 11 5 6 1 556 574 -18 96.86% 10
Fever 11 3 8 1 567 605 -38 93.72% 6
Pulse 11 1 10 1 494 635 -141 77.80% 2
Tactix 11 1 10 1 492 636 -144 77.36% 2
With 2 rounds left, you'd be pretty safe to say that the Swifts and Thunderbirds will both make the finals.
Having said that, there are 4 teams still in the running for the final 2 spots in the top 4. Those teams being the Steel, Magic, Firebirds and Mystics.
This is their run home
Steel - Mystics, Swifts
Magic - Pulse, Thunderbirds
Firebirds - Tactix, Fever
Mystics - Steel, Tactix
Looking at this, the crucial match is Steel vs Mystics. If the Mystics lose, they'll be out of contention as the Steel would've picked up their win before playing the Swifts and the Magic to beat the Pulse before shooting for 2nd against the Thunderbirds (predicting a loss for them). The Firebirds are in the box seat and should pick up the 2 wins needed and this could tip the Magic out potentially.
So I'm expecting the following to occure
Steel to defeat Mystics and lose to Swifts
Magic to defeat Pulse and lose to Thunderbirds
Firebirds to beat both Tactix and Fever
Mystics to lose to Steel and beat Tactix
So it'll end up
Swifts 26
Thunderbirds 20
Firebirds 16
Steel/Magic 16
---------------------------
Magic/Steel 16
Percentage favours the Firebirds and I can't split Steel/Magic for 4th as yet.
So ends my review of the past 4 weeks of the ANZ Championship
