Rubio To Minnesota

June 17th 2011 15:46
Ricky Rubio, the Spaniard from Barcelona, confirms that he will join the Minnesota Timberwolves next year. After two years of waiting to play in the NBA, he says he want to start his journey in the NBA and to fulfill his dream. In 2009, Rubio was the number five pick in the draft, but his $6 million dollar clause at Barcelona made him stay there, because the NBA could only buy out at $500,000 under league's rule. The NBA wanted it to come down to more manageable cost at $1.4 million dollars for Rubio. Ricky Rubio has been a star studded player with Joventut since he was 14. He has won a vast amount of titles in Europe; helped Spain reach the 2008 Olympic gold medal game against the United States, but lost to them. This season in Spain, Rubio is coming off a rough year. His average has dropped 6.5 points, and lost his starting position on the team. He averages a little over five points a game now. Ricky Rubio has spoken at a new conference at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium to say that he is prepared for the NBA, even though he did not have his best season. He addressed that he would do whatever he needed to help the team win as many games as they can. Rubio also acknowledged that the NBA is more physical so he has to hit the weights and bulk up with the frame that he has.

Many believe that Rubio is better suited for the NBA because the floor is larger and it gives him more room to operate. If he goes to the NBA, Rubio will wear the number 9 for the Timberwolves. Based upon his arrival to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the fans will get special ticket prices for the games next season. They will cost $9 a game for two. The Minnesota president, David Kahn, said “Ricky's skill set and feel for the game have made him one of the best young players in Europe for six years now, and at age 20 he's still a young player with a lot of upside.” The Minnesota Timberwolves and Rubio had to reach an agreement by May 31 in order to be eligible to play next season. Getting Rubio to the NBA was not an easy transition. Barcelona had to authorize his release with Spanish league officials, who had to forward their approval to FIBA (Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur), the international basketball federation. The final approval could not happen until the team completed its league championship run Tuesday night.
