Save our shed!

June 4th 2008 00:26
THE fate of Cranbourne’s iconic skate boarding venue, The Shed, will soon be decided by Casey council.

Cranbourne Shed skate park
Give us a place to skate.

Recent closed door briefings at the civic centre have debated the future of the region’s only indoor skate facility, which shut late last year, and local thrill seekers have renewed calls for a revamp and reopening.

It may not be all smooth skating, however, with a number of other community groups, including BATS Theatre Company, expected to challenge for some of the available space.

BATS’ rehearsal centre, The Factory, is attached to The Shed and has three large rehearsal rooms and four practice rooms for dance, music and theatre.

Casey skaters want The Shed, which operated for 14 years before shutting down in December, to reopen bigger and better, and not relinquish space to The Factory.

Narre Warren mother of three Tracy Clark said The Shed should be revamped into a world class skate park.

“The Factory has taken space off The Shed before, it’s time council put some money into the skate park,” she said.

“My children loved it and they have had nowhere to skate since December.”

Councillor Wayne Smith, who was a representative of the Cranbourne Shire Council when The Shed first opened, said he supported the push to reopen The Shed as a skate park but recognised the possibility of The Factory, or other arts groups, acquiring a small part of The Shed’s current space.

“I’m keen to see it stay on as a skate park,” he said.

“But there is a possibility that parts of the space could be used by other groups.”

Cr Lorraine Wreford said the facility needed to be refurbished and reopened as soon as possible.

“The Shed needs to be brought into the 21st century for the skaters and bikers of Casey,” she said.

“We need to investigate other skate facilities, both nationally and overseas and come up with something world class.”

Cr Wreford said the possibility of the complex being used for anything other than skating, biking and rollerblading was not in the best interests of the community.

“I’m willing to fight tooth and nail to ensure The Shed remains an indoor skate park,” she said.

“With the soon-to-open Cranbourne Aquatic and Leisure Centre and the existing basketball stadium nearby, this precinct has the potential to be very popular with young people.”

Cr Steve Beardon said Casey skaters had been left in the dark since The Shed shut.

“We’ve got the opportunity to revitalise The Shed, install new ramps and rails and make it one of the best skate parks in Victoria.”

“The existing infrastructure is already there and Casey’s youth population want it back,” Cr Beardon said.

At Tuesday night’s Casey Council meeting, Cr Smith presented an item of urgent business which would invite members and groups of the city's arts community to be consulted before the future of The Shed was decided.

Cr Beardon said he pushed to have the motion amended to also include local skate groups in the process.

“The motion was passed, and arts and skate groups will now be invited to have their say on The Shed,” he said.

“It will be hard for skaters to voice an opinion, however, because unlike theatre and dance groups, there is no one body that skateboarders belong to. I’m still confident The Shed will remain a fully-fledged skate park,” Cr Beardon said.

Dont worry about making it "bigger and better" your asking too much as a skater who has respect for everyone but is never given any i know that you never make a big demand in a skateboard related subject. Just get them to open it buck up, double the fee if costs are problems or whateva and a petition and that'll be banging don't worry about bigger and better the shed is one of the largest indoor skateparks in the WORLD! so leave well enough alone but don't leave the doors closed.
peace.

ive heard that casey sold all the ramps from the shed on ebay. my mate saw a listing a few weeks ago. so they'll need more new ramps before it can reopen. why did they close it? because of dust on some ramps.
the shed was fun.

hay we used to work there and the reason why it shut down was because the church was losing money out of their own pockets and there was not that much support from the council. and it wasnt the city of casey that sold the ramps it was the salvation army because they had to get the money back some how. we fully supprt the idea of the shed re-opening but you need to rally alot more people behind this motion if you want the council to get off their butts and do something
or find some one who has lot of money to fund it.

from Casey Council 5/02/2009
"Plans are underway to return the Shed to a first class indoor skating venue. Preliminary design has commenced with regards to an upgrade to the entrance/amenities area while a brief to seek a design response to the indoor ramps is due to be released soon. This process will involve considerable consultation with the youth of Casey to ensure the final result reflects their needs.

I understand your frustration at the delays in this process however there have been a number of issues to resolve with regards to the project."

The Shed has not yet reopened, but will in around 12 months. The plans are being finalised this week for a complete remake to turn it back into a world class facility.

All existing ramps etc will be demolished. Final plan will go up for public viewing in early May. Construction to start next financial year.

Public consultation meeting was held 2 weeks ago, was advertised in the local papers and on casey council website and I might add has VERY low attendance.

rofl... tried google anonymous? or maybe the councils website.

Plans for the new shed were finalized Monday night.

Less complaining and more speaking to council does wonders. Very easy to be a keyboard warrior, but you need to act on it.

I began as a volunteer at The Shed Skatepark and then became a Supervisor. So there is great opportunites at The Shed for young people to get experience in the work place. I t was a great place to work /volunteer and gain new friends, & be involved in the competitions that were there etc.
I believe that it was a huge loss for The Shed to be closed as the youth in the community loved being there and it was better than hanging on the street.
There were many reasons surrounding the closure of The Shed.
I beleive that the crime will mulitiply if you don't re-open The Shed Skatepark.
I still see the kids/ youth that use to go to The Shed and they ask me when is the Shed going to open????...I tell them I dont know I tell them to do a petition and take it to the council. These kids have nowhere to go and use there energy anymore that has been taken away from them...so now they will commit a crime....I think that the council will be making a huge mistake if they do not re-open The Shed.
The Casey Council will not and are not very popular in the community..not that they care about what the community think they do the complete opposite!!!!!! Just like the traffic lights proposal for Hallam Ormond Rds it took 5 young teenagers lives cos they didnt listen to the commuinty!!!!!! I think it's time the Casey Council listened to the OUR community!!!!!

Anonymous, please don't make yourself look silly. I thought I had already made it very clear above that all is going ahead.

Rather than sit online and whinge, you should maybe have gotten active, attended the planning meetings, spoke with the planning and stayed in touch with council.

Maybe check skateboard.com.au where actual skaters discuss these sorts of issues. Then maybe you would see this actually now has progressed considerably, designs have been finalized, council have been meeting to arrange management to run it.

It's great to spend 3 minutes to jump online and flame away, but get involved instead of a random whinge every now and then and things happen.

Well for your information, this is not whinging this is actually just stating the facts..... I have asked numerous people in the community who were once involved with The Shed, have they heard anything about the meetings or progressions that have happened? The response i get is NO...Maybe people are having a whinge because they have not had there chance to have a say...and were a big part of it over the 14 years. I dont think the community has been made aware of it enough...

This was on the Casey council website for some weeks on the front page, also discussed in huge detail on skateboard.com.au and charliedontskate.com.au.

I have then also posted updates when available to this very thread since Feb this year.

So instead of asking people that 'were' involved, speak to council. You will actually find them very helpful if approached with the correct attitude.

Okay you can say thats where we can find stuff..which is fine..but when i am talking about the people that 'were' involved i am actually talking about the skaters/bikers/bladers....that i see in the street...they dont know...
I am happy that the Shed is re-opening but i think that the community was left a bit in the lurch...some people dont have the internet....etc..im not making excuses this is what i see and what the community sees.....

The main thing is, the council have been followed up continuously and an amazing park is going to be built.

The below link will lists detailed images of the overall design that was decided upon.

The design meetings had a cgood cross section of both BMX and skaters. All were extremely impresses with this final design.

Casey really needs to open the shed again. My mum worked there, but they didn't give the full job there, instead they gave it to an old fart with no experience, which my mum had been to the tafe next to the shed for years.

If they don't open the shed again, I bet a protest or something will start again, and besides, theres lots of places to dance outside, skaters and all that can't do the full trick thing, there's some laws with skating on footpaths and streets and such. PLEASE OPEN IT UP CASEY!

why do people with obviously no interest in this, that aren't involved with skating keep posting rubbish? If you cared, or even bothered to look into you would know that construction has now began on the new park, will be complete in around 4-5 weeks, just waiting for council to find a group to manage it.
