Semi-Finals ANZ Championship

June 30th 2010 07:29
Well it has been a remarkable weekend of netball in the ANZ Championship as the semi-finals have been played and won but not without the mandatory upset or bizarre game.

The finals kicked off on Sunday with the Major Semi Final between the NSW Swifts and the Adelaide Thunderbirds and it promised to be a very physical game. All that and a lot more was delivered. The opening minutes were dominated by the Swifts as Adelaide looked very nervy however during the first quarter there was a momentum shift and the Thunderbirds were all over the Swifts, leading 14-10 at quarter-time. It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Thunderbirds extended their lead to 31-18 at half-time and 45-27 at three-quarter time. Despite the Swifts winning the last quarter, the Thunderbirds won 52-38 in the biggest upset of the season and halting the Swifts 13 game winning streak

NSW Swifts 38 (Susan Pratley 22, Catherine Cox 9, Amy Wild 7)
Adelaide Thunderbirds 52 (Carla Borrego 37, Erin Bell 12, Kate Beveridge 2, Jasmine Keene 1)

Meanwhile the elimination semi-final was played over the ditch in New Zealand with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic taking on the Southern Steel. This was a classic netball game though it didn't look like it at the end of the first quarter as Waikato led 16-8 with irene Van Dyk doing as she pleased for the Magic. Things changed dramatically though in the second quarter as the Steel lifted and 8 goals in a row stunned the Magic crowd however the Magic still led 24-21 at half-time. The Steel then came out with 5 goals in a row to start the 3rd quarter and take a 26-24 lead but as soon as they looked like going on with it, the second momentum shift occured and it was the Magic who re-took the lead and led 38-32 at three-quarter-time. That was the end of the Steel's charge as their risky netball allowed Van Dyk some easy baskets and the Magic crusied to a 50-42 win. Special mention must go to Magic goalkeeper Casey Williams who was absolutely superb throughout and in my view the number 1 goalkeeper in the world.

Waikato BOP Magic 50 (Irene Van Dyk 41, Jodi Brown 9)
Southern Steel 41 (Megan Dehn 24, Daneka Wipiiti 11, Julianna Naoupu 7)

As a result, the preliminary final is now being played between the NSW Swifts and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic this coming Sunday at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre with tipoff at 2:50PM.

TV Coverage will be on One HD and Ten from 2:30pm AEST this Sunday
