Australia vs England: The Ashes - GABBA Test...
November 23rd 2006 02:09
After what has been an endless build-up, the 2006 Ashes series between Australia and England finally bowled into action today at the GABBA.
In somewhat of an anti-climax, the first ball of the match, a Steve Harmison quickie, was ill-directed and ended up being caught by the second slip.
Channel Nine has really stepped up the coverage this year, a new look 3D scorecard, a 'hot spot' innovation, that uses heat sensing to work out if a ball has been 'snicked' or not and plenty more.
Super slow-mo is back and as impressive as ever. Though not as sharp as Channel Seven's Australian Open version. Must be different cameras?
Unfortunately, Richie Benaud did not have a face-lift, but his presence is still majestical.
Marvellous.
Major sponsors are 3 Mobile and Wolf Blass. Not sure whether KFC are still on board. The 3 Mobile advertisements look crisp and are totally watch-able.
Channel Nine will be broadcasting every day of every test LIVE into every state, regardless of ticket sales.
Michael Slater remains a part of the commentary team, despite his 'racial taunt' mishap earlier this year.
Ian Healy is by far the best commentator. Short, sharp and funny.
Security has been beefed up. The police have 87 cameras watching the GABBA and are cracking down on those instigating Mexican waves. Speaking from personal experience, there is nothing worse than a beer cup of warm urine raining down on you when the Mexican wave rolls past.
Simon O'Donnell returns as the host of the lunch-time 'The Cricket Show'. Slater and Phil Tufnell Same boring format however. Wouldn't we rather see in-depth analysis than tabloid stories on what players eat for breakfast?
Let's get some comments happening! Will the Aussies win in four days, or can the Poms escape with a draw? Surely England can't win?

A triple charisma bypass! I like it a lot.
I will agree with you there and on that one, he does take a few cheap shots. But I enjoye cheap laughs, especially at the expense of the Poms.
Bring on the second test.
Bring back Shaun Tait.
