Thome Gets Number 600
August 16th 2011 03:46
Jim Thome of the Minnesota Twins became the eighth member to hit 600 home runs, tonight. He joins Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffin Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and Sammy Sosa. The 40 year old hit a two run blast for home run number 599 in the sixth inning off Rick Porcello, and then he hit a three run jack in the seventh for number 600 off of Daniel Schlereth, the son of the Hall of Famer/ESPN analyst, Mark Schlereth. Both of Thome's home runs were hit in opposite field. When home run number 600 cleared the fence, Thome pumped his fist as he went around first base, and the crowd in Detroit came to its feet to applaud him. He became the second fastest hitter to reach 600. It took him 8,137 at bats to reach the milestone. Babe Ruth needed 6,921 at bats. Thome has 65 home runs off of the Detroit Tigers, which is the most off any team. He is the oldest to hit 600 home runs. Prior to him was Sammy Sosa. He was 38 years and 220 days old. The 600 home runs that Thome hit tonight was his 11th of the season. He hit 25 home runs, last year. He is bothered by injuries to his toe, oblique, and quadriceps. Before Monday's game, Thome hadn't homered since Aug. 4. He hit 334 home runs with Cleveland, and 134 home runs with the Chicago White Sox.
