Top 10 AFL fowards
April 4th 2008 05:08
The 2008 AFL season is in full swing with round three kicking off in less than four hours.
Based on a trawl through Dream Team and Fantasy draft competitions, I have compiled a list of 10 exciting full forwards to keep an eye on this year.
---
Ten - Alwyn Davey - Essendon:
The pocket rocket forward pocket can slip through holes and carve defences like a good side of beef. He can kick goals too. Not bad for a 23-year-old father of three! His defensive pressure ensures he keeps the heat on his opponents.
Nine - Jack Riewoldt - Richmond
The name of an established champion with a unique approach to his own game. Once he gets a regular game, he will kick goals. A future star and well worth the cheap price tag in Super Coach competitions.
Eight - Cameron Cloke - Collingwood
Ready to break through as a champion and will kick a number of bags in 2008. Collingwood have landed a gun and defenders hate playing on this tall, hard running and sticky fingered forward.
Seven - Chris Tarrant - Fremantle
Going through a goal drought and has had the heat turned up in the last few weeks. But still an out and out star. Tarrant is at the crossroads and needs to kick a bag in the next week or so. I'd back him to do it twice than not at all.
Six - Matthew Lloyd - Essendon
Still one of the game's best kicks, despite ripping his hamstring from the bone a couple of years ago. Lloyd an turn a game in a quarter, and can prove unstoppable on a long lead. Couples with Scott Lucas to create a tough defensive environment.
Five - Matthew Pavlich - Fremantle
Regarded by most as the game's best forward. Tall, strong, fast and mostly injury-free, Pavlich probably doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Underrated and worthy of the highest price tag of any forward in fantasty competitions.
Four - Paul Chapman - Geelong
Under the radar and through the big sticks. Chapman punishes sloppy mistakes and pounces on defensive fumbles. Not someone you want to kick the ball near with 20 seconds to go and your team is 2 points up.
Three - Johnathon Brown - Brisbane
Big, bad Browny. Could probably take the number one spot without a worry, but is probably underserviced by an increasingly inexperienced team around him. When he is hot, he is unstoppable.
Two - Scott Lucas - Essendon
A game breaker and the best left foot from outside 50-metres in the competition. Out for half the season with a PCL rupture, a huge loss for Essendon.
One - Lance Franklin - Hawthorn
Franklin is the game's best 'next big thing' though some would argue he has already come of age. My instinct is there is plenty more to come. Keep your eyes peeled on a automatic dream team selection.
