Top 10 AFL players in 2006...

September 2nd 2006 04:47
As the 2006 AFL home and away season draws to a close, what promises to be one of footy’s most exciting and unpredictable finals series is ready to kick into action.

Over the next week, Sport Talk will unleash a series of ‘Top 10’ on the Orble community, starting with the Top 10 players in 2006.

So here they are, in all their glory - the Top 10 AFL players this season.

10 - Jonathon Brown (Brisbane)

9 - Cameron Bruce (Melbourne)

8 - Nick Dal Santo (St Kilda)

7 - Daniel Kerr (West Coast)

6 - Matthew Pavlich (Fremantle)

5 - Ben Cousins (West Coast)

4 - Chris Judd (West Coast)

3 - Adam Goodes (Sydney)

2 - Simon Goodwin (Adelaide)

1 - Scott West (Western)

The five most notable omissions; Tyson Edwards (Adelaide), Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda), Barry Hall (Sydney), Chad Cornes (Port Adelaide), Brad Johnson (Western).

Interesting that not one Collingwood player could be placed in the Top 10 or even amongst the notable omissions. Alan Didak (Collingwood) would have been the most likely candidate.

So, what do you think? Has Sport Talk got it right? Not enough Victorians? Have your say!

Next time, Sport Talk ranks the Top 10 AFL Rising Stars.

Yes, Alan Didak unlucky not to get a special mention.. wouldn't rate him top 10 though, will be interesting to see how he goes in the copeland trophy. If the list was composed at the half way mark Dane Swan would have been top 10.

Good choice for number 1- Westy has been unlucky to not yet win the brownlow, maybe this year.

One player you missed- Brendan Fevola. Leading the coleman medal and has done extremely well kicking so many in a team that doesn't kick many- I think he has kicked about a third of the blues score for the season.

Anyhow look foward to the top 10 rising star.. need I say my number 1?

Rising star will be interesting this year..my tip is Andrew Raines in a tight race from Danyle Pearce and Marc Murphy

Dane Swan has had an incredible season, would rate in the top 40 players in the league.

Not sure about Fevola, much like Scott Lucas for the Bombers, how highly can you rate the player that has the onus of scoring the bulk of a side's score.

If Carlton didn't pick Fev on the lead, who else would they kick too?

I'd put Kade Simpson in the top whatever players before Fevola.

Rising Stars will be interesting, as Tony points out, Raines has had a stellar simpson, Murphy and Thomas were unlucky to get injured.

Perhaps Murphy had it wrapped up before he get hurt though? Bate (Melbourne) is also a dark horse.

Dave,

Good to see you back on Sport Talk. Do you care to share why Simon Goodwin is such a shocking choice for number two?

I thought Brown deserved a spot not based on the number of games he played (although endurance is a factor) but that each game he played, he had an amazing impact.

Had Brown played all 22 - Brisbane would have won another four games and Brown would have gone close to the Brownlow (or do the umpires hate him?)

Brad Johnson was perhaps the surprise packet of the 2006 AFL season, 70 goals is an outstanding effort as a small(er) forward.
