Uggla's Streak Ends At 33 Games
August 14th 2011 23:39
Dan Uggla, who entered the game with a 33 game hitting streak, was trying to extend the streak to 34 against the Chicago Cubs. Well, he went 0-3, which meant that he ended his streak at 33 games. Uggla said, “That's more games than I thought I would ever have.” The Cubs stopped Uggla's streak and railled from a four-run deficit to beat the Atlanta Braves, 6-5. Now, the Cubs are streaking, because they have won 11 of 14. Dan Uggla's best chance of extending his hitting streak came in the fifth inning when second baseman, Darwin Barney, made a diving catch off Uggla's fly ball in shallow right field. Barney was fully extended when he made the catch. Barney said of the catch, “Because of the circumstance and all that, I'm pretty happy about it.” At Uggla's final bat appearance in the seventh, he grounded out to shortstop, Jeff Samardzija. When Uggla was asked about his streak, he said, “The streak was one thing. I'm more disappointed in the loss.” Uggla's streak was the longest in the majors since Chase Utley had a 35 game hitting streak in 2006; Jimmy Rollins had a 38 game hitting streak that started in 2005 and carried over into 2006. During the hitting streak, Uggla had a batting average of .173 on July 5, and was raised to .231. He had 15 homers and 32 RBI in those 33 games. Dan Uggla's teammates patted him on the back and hugged him in the dugout after the game.
