UNC Receives Notice From NCAA
June 22nd 2011 14:09
UNC has received a notice of allegations that was given to the school on yesterday evening from the NCAA outlining major violations in the football program. In response to the notice after a year long investigation, UNC released a 42 page document detailing the allegations. The first time NCAA visited the UNC campus was last summer when the former defensive tackle, Marvin Austin, tweeted about a trip to Miami. The initial focus soon expanded from improper benefits to academic violations involving Wiley; refused to be interviewed about the allegations. The notice accused former associate head coach, John Blake, for providing “false and misleading information: providing tax records from 2005-10 and information about a $45,000 deposit in December 2007 from Wichard's bank” to both the school and NCAA investigators about the relationship with late NFL agent, Gary Wichard. Wichard died from diabetes and pancreatic cancer in March. Blake received $31,500 from Wichard firm, Pro Tect Management LLC, from May 2007 to October 2009. NCAA said the money was for Blake to give players to Gary Wichard once his players reach the NFL. Even though Blake denied working for Pro Tect Management LLC in interviews, the firm was listed as a previous employer on a credit report from last July. According to the notice, it had “vice president of football operations” on a Pro Tect brochure. Blake's attorney said the loans were between friends during “tough financial times.” The notice also states that seven players received more than $27,000 in benefits in 2009 and 2010. This included defensive end, Robert Quinn receiving two black diamond watches, a pair of matching earrings, and travel accommodations to Miami for benefits worth $5,642; receiver, Greg Little, for accepting diamond earrings as well as travel accommodations to the Bahamas, Washington, D.C., and a couple of trips to Miami for benefits worth $4, 952.
Other players were edited or added to the notice. The NCAA said one of the players received more than $13,507.47 in benefits, with more than $5,000 linked to Wichard. Another received $5,642.92 while a third one received $5,040.20. The NCAA alleged Jennifer Wiley, a tutor, for unethical conduct by refusing to cooperate with the investigation and providing $3,500 of extra benefits in travels, parking expenses, and free tutoring. The school was accused for “failing to monitor social media activity” in 2010 as well as the conduct of former player, Chris Hawkins. Hawkins was linked to trips to Atlanta and Las Vegas booked by corner back, Kendric Burney; paid $1,000 for the jersey of Georgia's A.J. Green. Green was suspended for four games because the NCAA said that Hawkins qualified for an agent. Hawkins has been around the UNC program for years but has been told to stay away. Now, UNC has 90 days to respond to the notice and is scheduled to appear before the NCAA infractions committee in Indianapolis on October 28. For punishment of their actions, Blake resigned as coach in September, the day after the Tar Heels' season opener, Marvin Austin was dismissed from the team after the NCAA's preliminary determination that he had received between $10,000 and $13,000 in improper benefits, Greg Little and Robert Quinn were both “permanently ineligible.” All three players returned to the UNC campus in March for pro scouts workouts and apologized for their actions. Quinn was a first rounder in the draft, while Austin and Litter were second rounders.
