Zambrano Suspended 30 Days For Actions

August 13th 2011 22:22
The temperamental Chicago Cub pitcher, Carlos Zambrano, has been placed on the disqualified list and will be suspended for 30 days without pay. The manager of the Cubs, Jim Hendry, said, “His actions last night were totally intolerable.” “This was the most stringent penalty we could enforce without a release.” He added, “There's not much worse than running out on your teammate and announcing your retirement.” On Friday, Big Z gave up five home runs in a 10-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves, and was ejected from the game when he threw a pitch that was directed at Chipper Jones. After that incident, Zambrano went to his locker and cleaned everything out of it, and told trainers and clubhouse people during the game that he was retiring. The Manager, Hendry talked to Zambrano's agent, Barry Praver, on Saturday and said it is his understanding that Zambrano is not retiring at this point. Carlos Zambrano did apologize for his actions to the Atlanta Braves' general manager, Frank Wren. Zambrano ruined the former Braves' manager, Bobby Cox, because he had his number six jersery retired before the game on Friday night. Hendry was asked on Saturday if he knew where Zambrano was, he said, “I have no idea.”

The Cubs' third baseman, Aramis Ramirez, said Zambrano would be welcomed back by his teammates, but only if he made changes. Ramirez also said, “He's got to think a little bit more. He's one man. It's not just one time. A lot of people tried to help him. He won't let them.” The Cubs' pitching coach, Mark Riggins, who was one of the last members to speak to Zambrano, said he didn't see Zambrano's actions coming. He also said, “It shocked me that happened last night.” “For a player to leave a team, that's kind of just leaving us out there hanging and it seems like it's about him and it's not about the team.” ESPN's baseball analyst and former Cub, Rick Sutcliffe, believed it was time for the Cubs and Zambrano to part ways. He added, “This is a proud man, probably too much. You know that he was embarrassed with what happened. You know that it was pride that got in the way, that created that situation, but... enough's enough. The Cubs at this point need to sit down with him and figure out a way to end this relationship because it's not working there.”
